Account Management
This page covers account deletion, tier downgrades, and data retention policies for Control Zero for AI Governance.
Account Deletion
Account deletion is a permanent, irreversible operation. It follows a two-step verification process to prevent accidental data loss.
Deletion Process
- Request deletion. Navigate to Settings > Account > Delete Account. Enter your account email to confirm.
- Confirm via email. A confirmation email is sent to the account owner. Click the confirmation link within 24 hours to finalize deletion. If the link expires, repeat step 1.
What Gets Deleted
- All projects and their policies
- All API keys
- All notification channel configurations
- Organization membership and RBAC assignments (Teams tier)
Audit log data is handled separately: see Audit log data after deletion.
Audit log data after deletion
- Deleting an organization removes that organization's audit records at the time of deletion. If that removal fails, the organization deletion still completes and the failure is logged for manual follow-up.
- Deleting your account removes your account and the organizations it owns, but does not yet remove those organizations' audit records. Removing them as part of account deletion is being rolled out. Until then, to have them removed, email
privacy@controlzero.ai.
Tier Downgrade
When you downgrade from a higher tier to a lower one, the change takes effect at the start of your next billing cycle. During the transition:
Grace Period
After a downgrade takes effect, you have a 30-day read-only grace period for features and data that exceed your new tier limits. During this period:
- You can view and export data that would otherwise be inaccessible on the lower tier.
- You cannot create new resources that exceed the lower tier limits (e.g., new projects beyond the Free tier limit of 1).
- Existing policies, API keys, and configurations remain accessible in read-only mode.
Data Retention After Downgrade
After the 30-day grace period, data that exceeds the new tier limits (other than audit logs, which follow the separate rule below) is retained for an additional 90 days before deletion:
- Projects: If you downgrade to Free and have more than 1 project, excess projects are archived. You must select which project to keep before the 90-day window closes.
- Policies: If you downgrade to Free and have more than 3 policies per project, excess policies are deactivated. They can be reactivated by upgrading.
- Audit logs: Retention follows the new tier's configured window (see the retention note below). Automatic deletion of audit records at the end of that window is not currently running, so logs older than the window are not purged today.
- Teams features: Browser extension, coding hooks, Scout, RBAC, fleet management, and compliance reports become unavailable after the grace period.
After the 90-day retention window, archived projects and policies are permanently deleted. Audit logs are not covered by this deletion (see above).
Data Retention by Tier
Each plan defines an audit log retention window:
| Tier | Audit log retention |
|---|---|
| Free | 7 days |
| Solo | 90 days |
| Teams | 365 days |
These windows are the plan policy and are not applied yet: organization retention settings currently default to 30 days, and automatic deletion of audit records at the end of the window is not currently running on the production audit store, so audit records are kept longer than the window. Deletion will be switched on only after dated notice to affected organizations. When tiered audit retention takes effect, Free organizations created before then keep their existing 30-day window unless an owner changes it, and an owner can set a shorter window.
Export audit logs you need to retain. The Audit Log page downloads the filtered trail as CSV. On Solo and Teams tiers the management API additionally serves JSON, ArcSight CEF, and RFC 5424 syslog. See Audit log export formats.
